New Research Links Gum Disease to Heart Health — What Solvang Patients Should Know

Dr. Robert A. Brugnone, DDS · May 30, 2026

The Heart–Mouth Connection Is Stronger Than Ever

For years, dentists have spoken about the link between gum health and heart health — and a new wave of peer-reviewed research is making that connection harder to ignore. A study published in the Journal of Periodontology found that patients with moderate-to-severe periodontal (gum) disease had significantly elevated markers of systemic inflammation, the same markers associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk.

What the Study Found

Researchers followed over 1,200 adult patients across a three-year period, tracking both their periodontal health and key inflammatory biomarkers in their blood. The results were striking: patients who received consistent periodontal treatment — including professional cleanings and at-home care guidance — showed measurable reductions in C-reactive protein (CRP), a key indicator of whole-body inflammation linked to heart disease.

In plain terms: taking care of your gums may be one of the most accessible things you can do to protect your heart.

Why This Matters for You

Gum disease is remarkably common — the CDC estimates that nearly half of adults over 30 in the United States have some form of periodontal disease. Many don't know it, because early stages are often painless. Signs to watch for include:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Gums that look red, swollen, or have pulled away from your teeth
  • Teeth that feel loose or have shifted

What You Can Do Starting Today

The good news: periodontal disease is largely preventable and treatable. Consistent brushing twice daily with a soft-bristled brush, daily flossing, and regular professional cleanings go a long way. Your dentist can also identify early warning signs before they become serious — which is exactly why those twice-yearly visits matter so much.

At Downtown Dental Solvang, we take a whole-health approach to your care. We're not just focused on your teeth — we're invested in your overall wellbeing. If you have questions about your gum health or would like a periodontal evaluation, we'd love to see you.
